Game Rules

Call the Play Football allows you to play along as you watch the game on TV. Before each play, you have the chance to make a play call will it be run or pass? Long or short? Which player will get the ball? Think of yourself as the Offensive Coordinator and get your play call in as quickly as you can (or else you will be locked out and unable to make a play selection!). You're scored on how accurately you're able to call the plays you'll see your results right after the play happens!

Basic Gameplay

To play the game, turn on your TV and tune into the game you want to watch and play. Find the game you are watching on the AirPlay Schedule once you launch the game on the web or on your mobile phone. Select the game to begin playing.

  • Make your play call selections by clicking on Run/Pass, etc. in the web version of the game or by using your d-pad on your phone for the mobile version
  • Make your selection as early as you can to avoid being locked out before the actual play happens
  • The more specific your play call, the more points you can earn
  • Select "Double" (* key on mobile version) to double the possible points for the play call - this can be used once per series of downs
  • Select "Blitz" (# key on mobile version) to call a Blitz (considered more than 4 rushers) - this can be used once per series of downs

Play Call Rules

Run Left
Runner crosses the line of scrimmage to the left of where the tackles are lined up at the snap
Run Middle
Runner crosses the line of scrimmage along or between where the tackles are lined up at the snap
Run Right
Runner crosses the line of scrimmage to the right of where the tackles are lined up at the snap
Player selection
Player who carries the ball during the run play
Pass Short
When pass receiver is on or up to 10 yards from the line of scrimmage
Pass Long
When pass receiver is more than 10 yards from the line of scrimmage
Pass Screen
When the pass receiver is behind the line of scrimmage
Player selection
Player who catches the ball (must be a complete pass)

Note: Play results are based on what can be determined by watching the television broadcast on any given play. If a run direction or pass distance cannot be accurately determined, these elements of the play will not be called by the AirPlay producers.

Scoring

Scoring Basics:

  • Score more points by making a more detailed prediction and getting it correct
  • Negative points are applied for incorrect predictions
  • Extra bonus points are awarded for correct calls that result in a first down or touchdown

For partially correct multi-level predictions, scoring will work as follows:

  • First level prediction must be correct to be considered a partially correct answer
    • This holds true for player predictions i.e. if the user selects Pass and player A, but it is a run to player A, the answer is not considered partially correct
  • Points for correct answers will be awarded
  • For incorrect portions of the prediction, negative points will be equal to:
    • 1/2 the negative score for the fully correct two level prediction (for two level predictions with one portion correct), rounded up to next increment of 5
    • 1/3 or 2/3 the negative score for the fully correct three level prediction (for three level predictions with one or two incorrect predictions respectively), rounded up to the next increment of 5 if necessary

Field Goals

Field Goal predictions are scored slightly differently than regular play predictions. Specifically:

Make Miss
Field Goal < 45 yards 50 (-10) 150 (-20)
Field Goal > 45 yards 150 (-20) 150 (-20)

1st Down/TD Bonus

If the user makes a 1, 2 or 3 level correct prediction and the play results in a first down or touchdown, they will receive a bonus (either a 1st Down Bonus or a TD Bonus respectively). Note that a user can get a portion of their prediction incorrect (i.e. 1st level correct, second and third levels incorrect) and they will receive a bonus (progressive scoring scale see scoring section).

Scoring for the 1st down/TD bonuses will work as follows:

1st Level 2nd Level 3rd Level
1st Down Bonus 50 100 150
TD Bonus 100 200 300

Scores will be added to the regular play calling score as a 1st Down Bonus or TD Bonus line item. These bonuses are positive point values only.

Double

The double option doubles the play calling score. The double can only be used once per series of downs. The double multiplier is applied regardless of positive or negative score on a particular play i.e. negative scores are doubled as well.

Blitz Bonus

Once per series of downs, the user can select the Blitz option. Selecting blitz correctly gives the user a blitz bonus of a fixed amount (+200). Incorrectly selecting a blitz deducts 20 points from the users score. Double option does not apply to the blitz call.

Other Scoring

The following earn you bonus AirPlay Points but do not affect your game score for the Live game:

  • Placing Bonuses - Finishing 1st, 2nd, or 3rd (for the quarter or the overall game) in a group that has at least 4 players will earn you extra bonus AirPlay Points.

FOOTBALL GAME TIPS

Scoring

Wondering exactly how you're getting scored for your predictions? Wondering why some of the plays are called as they are? Tough to compete for the top spot if you don't know. Check out the full scoring and game rules.

Three Levels

Seems obvious but it's not always easy! Make a three level prediction on every play - run or pass, direction or distance, and player. As a general rule, completed passes to the player you called get you the most points.

Use the Double

Don't forget the Double option! Smartly using your double is critical, but be careful - negative scores are doubled as well! You can use the double option once per series of downs. Some players like to use it on first down to make sure they get it in before the next first down, others like to wait until third down when the play call might be more obvious.

Call the Blitz

Remember, an AirPlay blitz will be called when 5 or more defenders rush the quarterback on a pass play. Predicting the blitz can boost your score 200 point or cost you 20 if you call it incorrectly!
